Review of the X-Cut XPress!

Hola!

I’m imagining its warm and I’m sitting somewhere beautifully sunny. Instead I’m wrapped in a snuggly fleece and blanket & trying to type to keep my fingers from ceasing up completely! Seriously though- this post was supposed to be all singing and dancing (in fact, neither of the two!).

I wanted to post a video with a little walk through of the XPRESS machine. Things were going well until I tried to upload it- it took 20 minutes to get to 96.4%- and , you guessed it, promptly crashed. So I’m hoping to upload the two quickies onto YouTube & just post the link. In order to be a good reviewer- I should declare all biases. I do demonstrate for Docrafts & so in some ways that makes me a little biased- HOWEVER- those of you that know me a little know I like to  be honest- so what I say, I do actually think is accurate and fair.

So—

What is it? It’s a machine with the capacity to take A4 sized folders/dies. There is no die or embossing folder known to man that it can’t cope with. (I wish the same could be said for me and my kids 😉 ). It will take any manufacturers dies & happily chomps through fabric, foam, light chipboard, cardstock etc. If you can get scissors through a product, then you should be able to use the X-Press for it (dies allowing).

One of its greatest features is that you can fold it up. Most of us don’t own craft studios (sigh!) and so space is at a premium. This folds up and down as much as you need.
Ok- here’s part 1 of the walk through ( before my phone dies and I had to make part 2!)
Part 1
And after …
Part 2
Yes- I’m squished down trying to fit into the frame (no rude comments please!) and I guess I should have smartened myself up a little but here’s the lowdown:

Pros
A4 machine- stack up loads of dies in one rotation. Saves you getting RSI (!!) & will handle the bigger A4 folders and dies.

No more ‘sandwiches’- just a dial that will allow for every different thickness of cardstock without having to add multiple shims etc.
Cuts a variety of materials

Great product guarantee. This is important. Having worked for them- they are brilliant at sorting out queries- and of course, I’m like your 24 hour help line too 😉

Able to use dies facing up or down (although  the manufacturer shows them facing up & the cutting pad will be much less expensive to replace than the base pad.

It’s a nice neutral colour. Some recent machines have colours & designs that are pretty let’s say ‘bold’!!

No electrical elements to stop working (we all know of difficulties this has caused)

Cons

Pads are not see through- although I’ve heard a whisper they might be bringing out transparent pads- which are so good for placement & partial cutting of dies (such as in Joy cards etc.)

So- in conclusion- the lowdown… this is an investment. It’s not a ‘pop out and buy with your pocket money’ piece of kit but its well worth its price. It’s priced at less than the eBosser- roughly £50 below both RRP’s although obviously you’ll find different places doing different deals.

Do I think its a good machine- yes. I love it so much, I gave my Big Shot to my Mum!!

Better dash- I’ve another post coming about my jaunt to Bournemouth!

See you soon, x

Hey. Docrafts have brilliant customer service- contact them directly- they’ll sort you out. I’ve not heard of that. There’s nothing stuck between the rollers is there?

Hi Jenny, Ditto what Keren says, or take it back to the shop you bought it from and they will return it, there is a 2 year guarantee. Hope it hasn’t spoilt your Christmas Die cutting Schedule, perhaps the shops should do a courtesy Die cutter when yours breaks like the garages LOL. Gill x

Thanks for your speedy responses. I managed to find a phone number for docrafts customer service, but all they did was tell me to contact the supplier. I had bought the machine online from Craft Superstore, but managed to find a phone number for them. Apparently they have had a few people contact them with the same problem, and they have been advised that there has been a faulty batch. However they are going to collect the faulty machine and deliver a new one tomorrow afternoon – fantastic customer service!

I am new to die-cutting, so I have been enjoying it until it stopped working! I have some Creative Expressions stencils, and I have used them to emboss with the Big Shot that we have at my craft group. Do you need a special shim to do the same with the Xcut?

I’ve been doing that kind of embossing with funky foam. Apparently XCut will have a mat out shortly. I found I could create the same effect with the foam.

Thanks – I must admit I did try with an old mousemat, and it did work!

I have enjoyed my xpress craft machine that i bought at knit & stitch in Dublin last spring. Unfortunately the gears in it have broken is there any way that I can get new gears.I have only used it myself and that was just to make my Christmas cards. I am not a commercial card maker. Please help me. Betty

Hi Betty- I’m wondering if it’s the xCut XPress you have? It only came out in Oct/Nov so if you bought it in Spring last year it’s unlikely to be the Xpress. Let me know if it is! Thanks, Keren x

Hi Karen, I live in Ireland and have purchased a xcut from the UK, which I am planning to pick up during a trip next week. I am trying to find out the dimensions of the actual machine, so that I sort out its transport, but can only find out the boxed dimensions. Can you help please? Lynda.

      Hi Lynda.
Here’s the tough measurements. Folded up machine: 12cm wide, 31cm long & 28.5cm high. That’s not including the handle dimensions- Handle isn’t attached initially.
There are 3 cutting pads, when stacked together they measure 22cm wide, 31 high and 3cm deep. There’s also a couple of information sheets & obviously the internal polystyrene packaging. Hope that’s useful to you x

My Xcut machine is not cutting a ‘happy birthday’ die.

Sizzix have replaced the die but it still not cutting. I’ve used different weights of paper any idea what I could be doing wrong?

What’s it like for embossing? I’m thinking of getting one. Gutted I missed it when it was in hobbycraft for £60! Doh!

Steve- I wish I knew of somewhere- the only thing id recommend is talking to the retailer where you bought it about returning the machine back to Docrafts?

I bought my x cut last year and hardly used it at all but the cogs have just gone. Hubby took it apart and said they should have been made of stronger material. Loved the ease of using this machine but reluctant to buy another because of the poor quality.

Hi. Sorry to hear that. My personal favourite would be the Big Shot if you were looking to replace. If you want an A4 capable machine then the Big Shot Plus is the one I’d recommend. It’s a lot sturdier and I’ve never heard of any cog problems with that brand.

Hi I also bought the Xpress machine loved it. It was so versatile until the cog broke inside if anyone knows where you can get spare cogs please. I have now bought the bigshot pro which is really sturdy

Ha ha, I’m one of the hubbies! Just took it apart and found the little cog near the handle had 2 teeth gone and the larger one below showed some wear here and there…. Some mob in England seems to have cogs for it. But as someone said here “Don’t bother” although they said their cogs are made of better material.
This seems to happen a lot reading through 😦
