Mug Bag and Rug with Craft Cotton Company fabric and Vlieseline

Hello everyone!

Hope you’re well. It’s a little while since I’ve posted anything sewing related and I recently had to create something for a Fiskars and Craft Cotton Company collaboration. I happened to be mooching around YouTube and came across a tutorial for a mug bag and rug.

It was pretty straightforward albeit a more time consuming sew. You can make this in an afternoon and the mug rug in a hour or two. Prepping the right sized pieces is the main bit of work. You end up with a lovely project…

I used a range of fabric by the Craft Cotton Company called ‘Deck The Halls.’ I’m not a fan of using Christmas fabric for many everyday projects as you end up not being able to use it beyond Christmas but I tried to put the direction of the words vertically so your eye doesn’t scan it and it looks more like just decorative text at a glance. I think I’ll get away using it into January at least!

When you open the bag, there’s a section that houses your cup or mug. You can just about see the two pockets on the inside of the flap.

It’s hard to see in this photo, but the bottom of the mug holder is sewn with their glitter fabric. I have to admit being quite sceptical- would it be hard to sew, would glitter get pushed down into the bobbin with the needle? I needn’t have worried as I was amazed how easy it was to cut and sew with. I’m definitely converted!

To give the project some stability, I used what is now my favourite sort of interfacing; Vlieseline H310 which is a recycled interfacing and apart from the fact that it works really well, it helps me feel better about the products I’m using. I really recommend it!

If you’re out and about and need your cuppa, then you may need to protect the surface and your mug rug comes handy. This isn’t actually the one in the tutorial- but was one that I used up my leftovers with. I will definitely be using this one at Christmas time!

You can see the rug and the inside of the mug bag. This was the part of the tutorial I wasn’t so keen on. It’s the design I don’t like as much- the heart feels chopped off at the top- but as it was the first time I’d done any fabric piecing, I was happy to follow the instructions.

You can see the two pockets- one is for the folded mug rug ( the other side is for your snack!) and then the pocket to pop your teabags or coffee sachets etc. I really loved making it. As usual my go-to tools were from Fiskars and there was some rotary cutting to speed up the initial cutting of the pieces. I would love to make another one; but in something bright and non seasonal. It’s such a pleasure using fab fabric and great interfacing. Do give it a try- you’ll find it a very absorbing project!
