Mario Bros party & the lovely NHS

It’s been an interesting weekend. Busy because we had my little boys’ party. I know I hunted for ideas about themed parties so I thought I’d show you a few ideas from our party in case someone else is doing the same search.

The theme was Mario (small moustache clad computer game hero!) and apart from all the balloons and welcome sign I tried to give the party more of a unified look so I created some T-shirts with iron-on Mario images so each little boy could wear it over their top and got them all into the theme. This also meant I could dispense with party bags as the T-shirts were the main present. They were really great value from an online shop as were the transfers. My hubby and his friend also had T-shirts too!

Each kid left  with a star decorated cupcake in a cellophane bag. I punched out a load of fancy labels and tied them off with some ribbon and a Mario badge.

We split the kids into two teams (red and green for Mario & Luigi colours) and created little wristbands using clip art saying ‘Super Mario Galaxy’ on top of either a red or green wristband. The first game was a mass snowball fight- they all had to scrunch up 50 pieces of paper for each team and they lobbed them at each other for a defined time. The team with the least in got more points.

The next games included building the highest ‘Bowser’ tower with boxes and ‘Bash The Bowser’ distance game with a weighted toy decrated with a Bowser image and a plastic hockey stick where they had to whack it over the longest distance. We did giant jigsaws and they got points for finishing first and the neatest!! We also did a hunt for Gold coins. For those kids that were thirsty, they could have ‘Sonic Tonic’ which was only water with a wrap of cardstock and clipart. It was only water!! They then had a round robin of a team race using the Wii Mario Galaxy game on two Wii’s projected onto two big screens. The kids loved this bit! We had to tear them away from the Wii game to have tea. After tea they played a bit more Mario Galaxy, we totted up the points and had a presentation using medals and a mini cup for the winning team! Here’s the birthday boy with the usual ‘Bogtrotter cake’ decorated with red and green. A word of warning- there is a gorgeous looking Mario Nintendo console cake around. It looks amazing but tastes pretty rough. Definately style over taste- not great when its the Birthday cake!! I didn’t actually cut the cake (saves on the last minute frenzy of chopping up cake, stuffing it into napkins and party bags- as they each had cupcakes I didn’t have to!!!

As this post is long enough already I won’t go into the whole story today- it’s got enough funnies in to dedicate a whole post to, but I manage to escape from hospital at the weekend with only an overnight stay!! I have to say that we have a truly amazing NHS. I know it’s not perfect always, but I was treated by a incredibly lovely bunch of staff. Makes you proud to be British!!!

Project supplies; Cardstock, whisper white, Real Red, Wild Wasabi. Tempting turquoise ribbon. Fancy label punch. Large cellphane bags.

Hope you are now feeling better Keren – yes we are very lucky to have an NHS. Sounds like you all had lots of party fun. What a never ending inspiration you are, I have now put on my thinking cap for my Grandaughters 4th Birthday am already in the process of making some sweet treat bags – two bags of (Easter!!) brightly covered M & S chocolates go a long way when split into smaller bags and look so pretty like this….adapted from one of your christmas classes. Look forward to your Sale-abration evening.
